Our Response to Ken Paxton's Voter Suppression Lawsuit.

Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio Stand Firm Against Texas AG's Attempt to Suppress Voters in Bexar County
San Antonio, TX - September 4, 2024 – The Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio condemn, in the strongest terms, the recent lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Bexar County. This legal action is a blatant attack on the fundamental right to vote and represents yet another effort to disenfranchise Texans, particularly in communities that have historically been marginalized.
This lawsuit is not just an attack on Bexar County; it is an attack on democracy itself. Our right to vote is sacred, and any effort to suppress voter registration is an affront to the values that this country was built on. The Attorney General’s actions are an unmistakable attempt to silence the voices of those who are already fighting uphill battles to be heard.
Texas has long been notorious for its restrictive voting laws and practices, and the numbers speak for themselves:
Texas consistently ranks near the bottom in voter turnout: In the 2022 midterms, Texas had a voter turnout of only 45%, placing it 44th in the nation. The state's turnout in presidential elections also lags behind the national average.
Texas is one of only a handful of states that does not offer online voter registration: Despite being the 21st century, Texans must still navigate outdated, cumbersome systems to register to vote, putting unnecessary barriers between them and the ballot box.
Recent voter suppression laws have disproportionately impacted marginalized communities: Communities of color, young voters, and LGBTQ+ voters have faced increased obstacles due to new voting restrictions, including stringent voter ID laws and reduced voting hours.
These statistics highlight the desperate need for expanded voting access in Texas, not further restrictions. Instead of addressing these issues, the Texas Attorney General is choosing to weaponize the legal system to make it even harder for Texans to exercise their most fundamental right.
The Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio stand in solidarity with Bexar County and all those fighting against this unjust lawsuit. We will not sit idly by while our rights are stripped away. We call on all Texans to recognize this lawsuit for what it is: a transparent attempt to suppress the vote and undermine our democracy. We urge local and state leaders to stand with us in opposing these efforts and to work tirelessly to protect the rights of all voters.
We will continue to fight for a Texas where every voice is heard, every vote is counted, and every citizen can participate fully in our democracy.
