May 2024 Membership Meeting

Dear Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio,

We understand and acknowledge the apprehensions that some of you may have regarding our decision to invite representatives from San Antonio Police Department and Bexar County Sheriff's Office to speak with us. We want to provide clarity and context for this decision, aiming to address any concerns and foster a positive dialogue.

Our primary goal is to create a safer, more inclusive environment for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community. By engaging with law enforcement, we hope to achieve the following:

Open Dialogue: Providing a platform for open and honest conversations can help bridge gaps in understanding. This is an opportunity for us to voice our concerns directly to those in positions of authority and for them to listen and learn from our experiences.

Building Trust: Building trust with law enforcement is crucial for our community's safety and well-being. By inviting them to speak, we are taking proactive steps to foster mutual respect and understanding.

Education and Awareness: It is important for law enforcement to be educated on the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. This engagement will help them understand our perspectives better, which can lead to more informed and compassionate interactions.

Support and Resources: We want to ensure that all members of our community feel supported. By collaborating with law enforcement, we can gain access to resources, support systems, and assistance in times of need.

Community Safety: Enhancing the safety of our community is a top priority. Engaging with law enforcement allows us to discuss and develop strategies to ensure that our spaces and events are safe for everyone.

We believe that constructive dialogue and collaboration are essential steps towards creating a more inclusive and supportive community. We encourage all members to participate, ask questions, and share their perspectives during this session. Your voices are invaluable, and this is an opportunity for meaningful change.

Join us at this month's membership meeting! We will meet on Tuesday, May 21st at Let's Be Honest - 1602 N. Main Ave. Meeting time is at 6:30pm. Our guest speakers are: Sheriff Javier Salazar; Lieutenant Stephanie Flores, the LGBTQIA+ liaison for Bexar County Sheriff's Office, and Deputy Chief Jesse Salame and LGBTQIA+ liaison for San Antonio Police Department.
